Tilmicosin

Tilmicosin is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic (tilmicosin) specifically for livestock and poultry. It inhibits protein synthesis by binding to bacterial 50S ribosomes. It is mainly used to prevent and treat pleuropneumonia, Haemophilus parasuis infection, and mycoplasma infection in pigs and cattle, as well as chronic respiratory disease and Mycoplasma synoviae infection in poultry.

Q1: What is the basic information?

A1: CAS No. 108050-54-0, Molecular Formula: C₄₆H₈₀N₂O₁₃. Appearance: White to pale yellow crystalline powder, slightly bitter taste. Insoluble in water, soluble in methanol, chloroform, DMF, and dilute acids (forming salts). Phosphate form is white to off-white powder, readily soluble in water.

Caution: Dust is irritating to eyes and skin; wear protective gear during handling.

Q2: What is its pharmacological action?

A2: Semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic (tylosin derivative). Binds to 50S ribosomal subunit 23S rRNA → inhibits peptide chain elongation → blocks protein synthesis (primarily bacteriostatic; bactericidal against APP at high concentrations). Highly sensitive to porcine APP, HPS, Pasteurella multocida, and Mycoplasma (swine/poultry). Effective against some Streptococcus and Staph. aureus. Not sensitive to Gram-negative bacilli (E. coli, Salmonella).

Q3: What are its indications?

A3: Swine/bovine respiratory disease syndrome (APP, HPS, Pm, Mhp), avian CRD/airsacculitis (combined with doxycycline), bovine foot rot (local + systemic). Chicken/duck CRD (Mycoplasma) and MS infection—reduces mortality from airsacculitis and joint swelling. Combined with doxycycline for mixed Mycoplasma/E. coli infections. Contraindicated in laying hens.

Q4: What are the storage requirements?

A4: Sealed container, cool and dry warehouse.
