Ivermectin

Ivermectin is a macrolide antiparasitic drug (ivermectin), which causes neuromuscular paralysis and death by activating GABA receptors in the parasite. It is mainly used for gastrointestinal nematodes, lung nematodes, and external parasites (scabies mites, lice, ticks) in cattle, sheep, and pigs. It can also be used for the prevention of heartworm in dogs and cats and for deworming poultry.

Q1: What is the basic information?

A1: CAS No. 70288-86-7, Molecular Formula: C₄₈H₇₄O₁₄. Appearance: White or off-white crystalline powder or flakes, odorless. Almost insoluble in water, soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, toluene, and chloroform.

Q2: What is its pharmacological action?

A2: Macrolide antiparasitic drug (avermectin derivative). Binds to GABA receptors and glutamate-gated Cl⁻ channels in parasites → Cl⁻ influx → hyperpolarization → neuromuscular paralysis → death. Highly effective against nematodes and arthropods (mites, lice, ticks, scabies mites, itch mites). Ineffective against trematodes and tapeworms. Lacks GABA-mediated pathway in mammalian BBB → wide therapeutic window.

Q3: What are its indications?

A3: Internal/external parasites in cattle, sheep, pigs—gastrointestinal nematodes, lungworms, scabies mites, itch mites, lice, ticks, kidney worms. Prevention of heartworm in dogs/cats (micro-dose), ear mites, scabies mites. Eliminates nematodes and external parasites in chickens/turkeys/pigeons/quails (spray/injection). Generally contraindicated in laying hens during egg production.

Q4: What are the storage requirements?

A4: Sealed container, cool and dry place. Keep away from oxidizers. Store at 2–8°C.
